British Fashion Awards 2008: The Winners

This evening the British Fashion Awards took place at Lawrence Hall, in Westminster hosted by journalist Mariella Frostup. The awards supported by the British Fashion Council and sponsored by Swarovski celebrated the biggest names in British fashion from designers to models.

The nominees were revealed back in August but you guys predicted correctly that Luella Bartley was the big winner. The winner attended in an outfit from her Spring 2009 line and was no surprise. Her recent collections have been adored by celebrities and fashion press alike and she truly deserved this accolade.

Other winners included global shoe empire Jimmy Choo who under the careful guidance of Tamara Mellon won Designer Brand of the year. Jourdan Dunn also must be celebrating tonight as she beat Agyness Deyn and Lily Donaldson to model of the year.

Fab Worthy: Luella Polly Dress

I'm sure I'm not alone in stating that Luella is one of my favourite designers. Her Autumn '08 show was amazing and now that the clothes have actually hit stores I am even more excited! I love the folky feel of the pieces and have been desperately searching out a cheaper version of the Caroline plaid skirt to no avail.

My favourite piece from the collection is a dress which has already been worn by Alexa Chung; the Polly dress (£395). I've seen it in the flesh many times and gazed at it adoringly. It would be a great addition to my wardrobe for the party season, I would simply team it with ankle boots. What do you think of the dress?

Trend Alert: Bow Alice Bands

Ever since Gossip Girl hit our screens last Spring I have considered alice bands in a whole new light. Originally reserved for young school girls who also wore knee-high socks, bows appeared on the catwalk this season at Luella and Marc by Marc Jacobs.

I have a slight accessory obsession so any excuse to add to it is welcome in my eyes so I'm currently building up an alice band collection. Bows are always good fun in my opinion as they make me feel a little bit like Minnie Mouse (never a bad thing!).

Most of you said you'd wear the trend and Lauren Conrad wore a bow in her hair in an episode of The Hills. So quick! Get in on the trend before everybody else does.

At a show supported by Alexa Chung and Roisin Murphy at the Serpentine, Luella presented a collection of brightly coloured almost-garish items mixing classic British fabrics such as tweed with bright pink and purple.

The Luella show is always a highlight of fashion week for me (and for many others) so I was intrigued to see what she would design for Spring 2009. At a show supported by Alexa Chung and Roisin Murphy at the Serpentine, Luella presented a collection of brightly coloured almost-garish items mixing classic British fabrics such as tweed with bright pink and purple.

Bartley explained, "I wanted a really colorful show. This sort of proper English lady, but it's done to an extreme degree that makes it hard and sick, so the brightest pink orange the sickest lilac the strongest purple so together it just looks very extreme."

The prim hats with polka dot netting veils are sure to catch on as they make an item traditional associated with older women hip.

Necklines were high but accessorised with pearls and there was also the occasional pair of ladylike gloves but in acid colours. The blouses and high-waisted skirts with ruffle trim are so wearable and sure to be adored by London's fashionistas.

Admittedly on first glance this loop charm by Luella (£49) looks worrying like a noose with charms on the end but it is actually a charm to be attached to your handbag, your keys or even yourself.

It features a cluster of bells and Luella heart charm meaning it will make quite jingle as you walk! I think it's a great treat for yourself or the perfect gift for a friend.

Trend Alert: Sheer

Sheer is my big tip for next season. Whether it's a sheer shirt or a dress with sheer detailing it's a demure yet sexy look which can be easily pulled off.

Madonna has already worn the trend and it appeared on the catwalk at Chanel, Luella and countless Graduate Fashion Week shows.

It's good to see the world of fashion returning to such a grown-up style of dressing. Team a Victorian style blouse with a pencil skirt (as pictured at Chanel) or wear a dress with patches of sheer with thick black tights.

If you are big busted then avoid a high-necked blouse, instead opt for an open neck or pussy-bow tie.
