Fab Flash: Karl Lagerfeld to Debut Silent Coco Movie

This week another film about Coco Chanel will be released but this time from the heart of Chanel itself. Creative director Karl Lagerfeld has created a silent movie about Coco starring model Edita Vilkeviciute as the young designer.

It will be screened on Wednesday night, along with a showing of Chanel’s Paris-Moscow pre fall ready-to-wear collection. Karl told WWD, “Today, people are ready for silent movies again, as they spend time — hours, I would say — looking at text messages and e-mails. I always loved silent movies.”

As Karl is very protective of the clothes he didn't want just anybody starring in the movie. Instead he chose from his close entourage including Brad Koenig and his bodyguard/private secretary Sébastien Jondeau. The actual workers from Chanel atelier star in the movie as Karl doesn't trust extras ("I cannot take extras. They don’t know how to touch the clothes.")

It took two days to make the mini movie and judging by the images released today it's going to be very artistically made.

Fab Flash: Roland Mouret Heads for Paris

Roland Mouret may well be French by birth but he has truly been taken under the London fashion wing as he spends much of his time in the British capital. Sad news then that today it was announced that he's taking his RM designs to Paris for next season.

Mouret will join the exclusive Paris Couture schedule from March 2009 although he plans to speed up the system by making his clothes available in just 2 months.

He commented, “The real luxury is that people want clothes straight after the show. With what’s happening around us, when a lot of women are really frightened to invest in clothes, we have to make the relationship with the customer stronger and keep the signature pieces, with the same hand.” Back in September Roland spoke out about the need for change in the fashion industry saying then, "There will come a time when the fashion shows as know them will end."

Today he also hinted that a menswear collection is in the pipeline but did not give a specific date for it's launch. Last season Gareth Pugh successfully moved from London to Paris when he won ADNAM funding.

I admire Roland's determination to take his fashion line in to the future and wish him all the luck in Paris!

Fab Flash: Katie Holmes Is a Miu Miu Model

The swirling rumors are confirmed: Miu Miu has chosen Katie Holmes to be the face of its Spring campaign. Details are still under wraps but we do know that the ads were shot last week — hence the smokey eye makeup residue caught on Holmes face seen left. With Miu Miu's past history of choosing celebrities such as Lindsay Lohan, Kirsten Dunst, and Vanessa Paradis, does this come as a surprise to you?

Fab Flash: Katie Holmes for Miu Miu

Miu Miu always surprise me with their choice of stars for the ad campaigns. Last season Vanessa Paradis fronted the campaign for their luxe sportswear Autumn line and today it was revealed that Katie Holmes will star in the Spring one.

People announced this morning that Miu Miu have confirmed Katie following many rumours linking the actress and the Italian brand. It is suspected that the images were shot last week when Katie was spotted out with her daughter Suri. It is expected to have been shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

I'm very intrigued and can't wait to see the finished pictures. How will Katie suit the apron designs?

British Fashion Awards 2008: The Winners

This evening the British Fashion Awards took place at Lawrence Hall, in Westminster hosted by journalist Mariella Frostup. The awards supported by the British Fashion Council and sponsored by Swarovski celebrated the biggest names in British fashion from designers to models.

The nominees were revealed back in August but you guys predicted correctly that Luella Bartley was the big winner. The winner attended in an outfit from her Spring 2009 line and was no surprise. Her recent collections have been adored by celebrities and fashion press alike and she truly deserved this accolade.

Other winners included global shoe empire Jimmy Choo who under the careful guidance of Tamara Mellon won Designer Brand of the year. Jourdan Dunn also must be celebrating tonight as she beat Agyness Deyn and Lily Donaldson to model of the year.

Hot on the heels of its successful line with Comme des Garçons, H&M has just enlisted Matthew Williamson for its next designer collaboration. "I am thrilled that my creations for H&M will be accessible to and hopefully enjoyed by so many people around the world," said Williamson. The English fashion designer is known for using vivid prints and Indian influences in his creations. His capsule collection is slated to hit H&M stores April 23 — we can't wait!

Diesel is bringing us an extra special gift this coming holiday. The hipster brand has teamed up with jewel extraordinaire, Ugo Cacciatori, to create an exclusive holiday jewelry collection. "Each piece is hand carved in sterling silver. . . . The collection ironically leads to a "sci-fi casualty," giving life to unexpected encrusted organic entities, chains, and earrings, massive buckles and tiny escapularios charms — all with a future vintage, sophisticated feeling," said Diesel founder, Renzo Rosso. Looks like a creepy cool collection. Me likey.

Fab Flash: Gwyneth Apologies For Fur Ad

Many of you were opinionated about the recent Tods ad where Gwyneth posed amongst fur but this weekend she has apologised claiming she didn't know it was real. Responding to complaints from PETA Paltrow explained,

"That was awkward, because I do not wear fur at all. It was a day-long photoshoot on a boat near Capri, and there were all sorts of poses with all kinds of clothes – none with fur. During one set-up, a stylist came up from behind and draped a stole around my shoulders. I didn't pay much attention to it, and when I noticed it was fur I assumed it was fake fur but did not ask, so it's my fault. I know it's not a great excuse."

Gwyneth and her husband Chris Martin are famous for their eco style of living, and Paltrow is close friends with eco designer Stella McCartney, whose clothes she often wears. The explanation has been described as "hollow" by director of Animal Aid, Andrew Tyler. "She's had months to set the record straight and only excuses herself when cornered. It seems it's all the fault of a stylist."

What do you think of her apology? It does seem that stylists are being given a hard time recently, with Kate Winslet recently blaming the same source. Do stylists need to be more careful or do celebrities need to be more aware and take responsibilities for their own actions?

Tear. After a long, hard struggle, Steve & Barry's will finally cut its losses. The current flailing economy has forced the retailer to file for its second bankruptcy. Steve & Barry's, which featured fun collections from the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker, Amanda Bynes, and Venus Williams, plans to liquidate all assets. Another one bites the dust. This one will be dearly missed.
